"Who are they?"



They are the villagers whose ownership rights over their ancestral forests has been recognized by the Indonesian government.


They are the Dayak people who inhabit all of the island of Borneo.


They are the local youth who migrate to urban centers for choices, opportunities and access to a "modern" lifestyle.



"Why should they be compensated for doing nothing and just leaving the rainforest as it is?"



Socio-economic conditions are limiting sources of income until the rainforest becomes the sole source.


We are working on the front lines of exploitive development and deforestation. Villages regularly receive offers from developers. This is a matter of urgency.


They do not want to sell. They don't have other options until now.

Compensation eliminates the only leverage developers have.


The villages will continue to be guardians of the rainforest and ensure its protection. 12 hours a day, this public utility provider produces oxygen, an indispensable resource for all of us.

Won't they just sell the rainforest in 25 years?"



Absolutely, if the socio-economic conditions don't change. We have 25 years to develop the region so that selling the rainforest is no longer the only source of revenue.
